In the society of that time, elderly women, especially those with unusual behavior or personalities that didn’t conform to societal expectations, could easily fall under suspicion. How did the witchcraft accusation begin?
A dispute with a neighbor, Ursula Reinbold, played a significant role in the initial stages of the case. Reinbold claimed that a drink Katharina gave her caused her to become ill.
Subsequently, rumors spread. Some people in the neighborhood attributed their own illnesses, animal sickness, or other misfortunes to Katharina’s alleged witchcraft. When did Johannes Kepler learn that his mother was being accused?
Kepler learned that his mother was being accused of witchcraft at the end of 1615. At that time, he was conducting significant work in the field of astronomy. Nevertheless, he did not ignore the case.
